Captured and Survived a WWII Prisoner of War Camp

Captured and Survived a WWII Prisoner of War Camp

Dr. Magarelli’s father was an Italian immigrant at age 9 to the US from Bari, Italy. When he was in his late teens, he volunteered for the army and was captured by the Germans and placed in a prisoner of war camp in Italy. Prior to the service, he was a 210-pound man; after he returned to his home, he weighed a mere 95 pounds. He went on to develop diabetes and died at age 34, when Dr. Magarelli was just 11. “That history and my limited time with my dad has stayed with me,” Dr. Magarelli said. “It has given me a huge respect for my father and his love of his new country. My commitment to help military families create their own families originates from my father’s military experience; I dedicate my work to his memory.
